What You Need to Know to Bring Your Tokens to Xplor Pay

What is a token?

A token is a unique identifier that references credit card information stored with your payment processor. It is a tool that software providers can use to reduce PCI scope.

Rather than storing actual card numbers in a database, a software provider can send the card data to the payment processor in exchange for a token. The token is typically a series of numbers or letters that uniquely identifies the card stored on file.

For example, if you run a gym and want to bill a member on a monthly basis, you could send their card data to your payment provider and request a token. You would store the token ID in your database. Then, when it's time to charge the card, you would send the token ID to your processor. The processor uses the token ID to retrieve the card information and process the payment.

Can I bring my tokens from my current processor to Xplor Pay?

Certainly. Many payment processors offer an export option for token data. If you’ve been storing cards on file with your current processor, you can ask them to provide Xplor Pay with that card data.

We will work with the provider to securely transmit the data and import those tokens, along with their associated card information, into our system.

Does Xplor Pay charge a fee to import tokens from other processors?

No. Xplor Pay does not charge a fee for this service.

How do I initiate this process?

To request an export of token data, you’ll need to contact your current processor’s support team. They will work with you to gather the information necessary to process the request.

Please note that some processors may charge a fee to process a token export. Every processor is different, and their support team should be able to provide you with details and a timeline for your request.

What do I tell my current processor?

Below is a script you can follow to request a token transfer from your current processor:

“My name is [your name], and I am the [your title] of [your company name]. I’d like to request a transfer of all token data stored under my account to Xplor Pay. I’d also like to understand your process, timeline, and any fees associated with this request.”

What if my current processor has questions for Xplor Pay?

Direct them to Xplor Pay's token portal and click on "I'm a Payment Processor." This page details the token import process and offers contact information for coordination.

How long does it take Xplor Pay to import my tokens?

Once we receive the data export from your current provider, Xplor Pay will import the data into our vault within five business days.

How do I keep my token information up to date?

Credit cards have expiration dates, and new card numbers are sometimes issued when cards are reported lost or stolen. It’s not uncommon for card data to change after it’s placed on file.

To address this, Xplor Pay offers an Account Updater service, which we recommend enrolling in if you plan to store cards on file. Enrolling in this service allows us to receive updates from Visa, Mastercard, and American Express whenever something changes for a card you’ve stored with us. This provides peace of mind and lets you focus on your business instead of contacting customers for updated card information.
